Subject: [Snowbird 2008]: Meeting-related awards
Meeting-related awards
Meeting-related awards are those either in recognition of outstanding
research presented in one of the three existing competitions or
intended to help defray costs associated with attending the Animal
Behavior Society annual meeting.
[See the Conference website at:: http://www.animalbehavior.org/Snowbird08/
for more information about these awards]
** Warder Clyle Allee Competition **
This competition was named in honor of Dr. Warder Clyde Allee, an
early animal behavior researcher who was very influential in the
development and direction of animal behavior research in this century.
In the Allee Competition, 12 to 15 students will be selected to
present the results of their research in a special Allee Session at
the ABS annual meeting.
Eligibility: Any independent graduate student research is eligible
(including, but not limited, to the doctoral dissertation). Although
the presented work may be part of a larger, collaborative effort, the
student should be the main person responsible for the
conceptualization and design of the research, the collection and
analysis of the data, and interpretation of results. The applicant
cannot have completed defense of the doctoral dissertation before the
preceding ABS annual meeting. An individual can enter the session only
once per lifetime. Only single- authored papers are eligible for the
session. Applicants indicate their desire to be considered for the
competition when submitting their abstracts, by checking the
appropriate box on the abstract submittal form.
** Founders Memorial Poster Paper Award **
Eligibility: All members of the society in good standing are eligible
to enter the competition. Applicants can indicate their intention to
enter the competition by marking the appropriate box on the Abstract
submission form.
** Genesis Award for Undergraduate Research **
The Genesis award was created to encourage undergraduates from
academic institutions of all sizes to participate in research and
present their findings at the Animal Behavior Society. Undergraduates
who submit posters for presentation at the ABS annual meeting will be
automatically entered in the Genesis Award poster competition. Judging
criteria include significance of the research topic, research
methodology, research results, and presentation. Students should be
prepared to demonstrate mastery of their subject material, and will be
evaluated by judges based upon the poster itself as well as by their
oral discussion. A complete set of judging criteria can be found at
the ABS Education Committee website, under Career Development. The
winner for the Genesis Award receives a
certificate and US $ 100.
Eligibility: All undergraduate students who submit posters for
presentation at the meeting will be considered eligible. A checkbox is
available on the Abstract submission form for you to alert the program
officer(s) about your presentation.
** Turner Award Travel Grant for Undergraduates **
The Animal Behavior Society has once again been awarded travel funding
from the National Science Foundation to bring undergraduates to the
Annual Meeting. The ABS Diversity Committee is calling on the
membership to identify applicants for the Charles H. Turner Award, and
to encourage them to apply right away. This travel grant is geared
toward addressing the Society's goal of increasing diversity of our
membership through supporting undergraduate student attendees of our
annual meetings.
The deadline for applications is May 15, 2008, which will allow time
for selection and notification before the deadline for abstracts to be
filed on June 2nd.
** Latin American Travel Award **
The Latin American Travel Awards are intended to encourage greater
participation of Latin American researchers in ABS meetings, by
helping to defray the costs of international travel, housing and/or
meals at meetings. Given the eligibility criteria below, priority will
be given to Ph.D. students who are attending an ABS meeting for the
first time and who have not received a Latin American Travel Award in
previous years. Award values vary according to funds available, and
range from US$ 200 to US$ 400. Candidates are prioritized according to
the quality of their abstracts and CVs.
Eligibility: Latin American Travel Awards are restricted to Latin
American graduate students enrolled in programs in Latin American
institutions, who will be presenting a talk/poster at the ABS meeting.
** Diversity Fund Student Registration Fee Award **
The Diversity Fund Student Registration Fee Awards are intended to
encourage participation and defray costs of attending the annual
Animal Behavior Meetings by covering registration fees for graduate
students and, in some cases (see below), established professionals, of
under-represented minorities. Awards will be made by lottery of all
valid applications received before the deadline. Preference is given
to individuals presenting research results.
Eligibility: Applicants from North America must be enrolled in a
graduate program at the time of application and must be members of
under-represented minorities who are of African, Asian, or Latin
American descent or of Native American heritage. Citizens (graduate
students or established professionals) of Latin American countries and
non-white citizens of African countries are also encouraged to apply.

Subject: Fwd: Field Assistant Opportunity July through December
Field Assistant Opportunity:
2 field assistants are needed for fieldwork for a PhD student's
dissertation from the University of Massachusetts Dartmouth in dolphin
feeding behavior. The field season will run for approximately 6 months,
from July through mid December. Research will take place in Cedar Key,
Florida, 3 hours north of Tampa and 60 miles west of Gainesville.
Assistants will be expected to work on a boat 6 to 7 days per week, for up
to 10 hours at a time. Typical weather conditions in summer include 95
degree heat, very high humidity, and no breezes. Fall and winter are
cooler. Prior experience working on dolphins and habitats, as well as
acoustics, is preferred but not required. Those with no experience should
demonstrate their willingness to learn.
This is not a paid position. Assistants will have the option to obtain
their own housing and food in Cedar Key, however, if they choose to stay
with the PI, food will be paid for and housing will run approximately $75
per month per assistant. Opportunities for part-time work in
tourist-related positions in Cedar Key may be available to
assistantshowever it is their responsibility to obtain those jobs and
assistants must make the field work a priority.
Priority will be given to applicants who can stay for the duration.
However in the case that adequate assistants can be found for the entire
fall, it may be possible to accept applicants who can only participate in
part of the field season. A minimum commitment of one month is required.
Please send an email of inquiry to stefanie.gazda at gmail.com with the
subject line as "Field assistants for 2008". Be specific about how much
time you can commit to. A more in depth description of the position and
its requirements will be emailed outat that time candidates who are still
interested should email their CV and informative cover letter to the above
email address.

From: Shan Duncan <sdduncan at abs.animalbehavior.org>
Subject: ABS Meeting 2008: Deadline for Abstract Submissions: June 2nd
2008
Submissions for all presentations will close on June 2, 2007,
midnight EST (24:00 military time). Submission for contributed talks
will close when the limit is reached or the deadline, whichever comes
first.
http://www.animalbehavior.org/Snowbird08
All persons presenting a poster or talk at the meeting (including
symposium & plenary talks) must register and submit an abstract via the
conference website. Abstracts should clearly communicate the nature of
the scientific research conducted and the major results.
You must be logged in with your ABS username to submit an abstract.
If you do not recall (or have not set) a password, you may set one
from the login page that appears when you click the login link.
ABS policy permits current members (members at the time of the
meeting) to present one talk OR poster at the annual meeting. This
means that a current ABS member may be first author (i.e. present) a
single talk/poster. Members may be listed as coauthors on additional
presentations, but the first author (i.e. presenter) must be an ABS
Member. Invited talks (e.g. Plenary, workshops, and symposiums) are
not counted in this limit. An invited speaker who is also a current
ABS member can be first author and present one additional talk or
poster.
Be advised that there is a limit on the number of Contributed Talks
that can be accepted. ABS bylaws require us to accept talk abstracts
in the order received rather than the merits of the abstract or the
presenter. You may still submit your most excellent abstract as a
contributed poster, but not as a contributed talk once this limit has
been reached. The current limit is set at: 200. Due to limited space
at Snowbird, this will be a firm limit for 2008.
Please keep the title of your abstract to around 75 characters and use
sentence case; do not use an "all caps" format.
The abstract itself should be no longer than 1200 characters
(including spaces), which is about 200 words.
In Summary - YOU WILL NEED:
* To obtain your ABS username (make sure you are a current member in
good standing).
* Establish your password using your ABS username before you can log
in the first time or if you do not remember your password from last
year.
* Log in using your ABS generated username and the password you created.
For technical help, please check the "how to" folder articles on the
Snowbird08 site. If you need further help you may use the "contact"
link (upper top right) to send an e-mail to the ABS Central Office.
Please provide as much information about your computing environment
and the details about the problem as possible in order for us to help
(OS, Browser version, Name, Institution/location, time and date as
near as you can tell and e-mail address.). You may also use the
contact address if you are unable to submit your abstract information
electronically.
